Later sowings March direct into the growing site 5cm (2") deep in rows 60cm (24") apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Glasshouse seedlings should be transplanted to the growing site in March, 10cm (4") apart in rows 60cm (24") apart. Outdoor sowings should be thinned to 10cm (4") apart, the thinnings can be transplanted to make extra rows. When the first beans form, remove the top 6cm (3") to discourage black fly. MATURITY July Onwards HANDY TIP For best flavour and texture, pick the beans when the pods are 15-20cm (6-8"), but before the scar (the mark where attached to the pod) has discoloured.

Outside sowings from May onwards, 4cm deep, spaced 5cm apart in rows 30cm apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Glasshouse seedlings should be gradually hardened off before planting outside in late May. Outside sowings should be thinned to 10cm apart as they become large enough to handle. MATURITY July onwards. HANDY TIP It is probably better to sow small lots at regular intervals as this will ensure a continuous supply of fresh beans.

WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin the seedlings gradually as they grow to an eventual spacing of 10cm (4"). Do not transplant. MATURITY June Onwards HANDY TIP Can be sown in early March in a cold frame or under cloches for an earlier crop. Not out of place in a flower garden with its pretty foliage.

When they are about 10-15cm tall, When seedlings are about 10-15cm tall,thin to 45cm apart, planting them 2cm deeper than in the seed bed. Water well. MATURITY First heads should be ready from August. HANDY TIP Once the main head has been harvested, the plant will produce small heads over the following weeks.

HARVEST November to January HANDY TIP Once plants are mature you can pick the leaves from the top of the plant to use as an alternative green vegetale.

WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin out the seedlings as they grow to 2.5cm (1") apart and plant out in permanent site in late May or June 20cm (9") apart. Glasshouse sowings should be pricked out into trays spacing 5cm (2") apart, gradually harden off and plant outside as soon as conditions allow. MATURITY July to November HANDY TIP For best result plant in firm ground, dug the previous year. Plant at 45cm (15") apart for larger sized curds.

Sow outdoors mid-May to June direct into growing site 1cm (1/2") deep 2 to 3 seeds in each position 60cm (24") apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Greenhouse sowings should be gradually hardened off once they have developed the first pair of rough leaves and transplanted to growing site in late-May to early-June 60cm (24") apart. Outdoor sowings should be thinned to one plant per station. MATURITY July onwards when fruits are approximately 10-15cm (4-6") long. HANDY TIP Pick regularly to encourage a continuous crop.

1635cm30cm x 45cmOrdered from Kings Seeds WHEN TO SOW April to May WHERE TO SOW Sow indoors in April to May in 8cm (3") pots using good quality seed sowing compost at 18-21°C (65-70°F). Keep compost moist at all times but do not overwater. Sow direct in May into growing site, 2 seeds per station spacing 45cm (18") between plants in a block formation. Thin to strongest seedling. WHAT TO DO NEXT Module or peat pot raised seedlings should be transplanted when all chance of frost has passed. Do not sow in rows but in blocks 45cm (18") square to aid the pollination by wind. HARVEST July onwards - Cobs are ready when the tassels turn brown.
