SUCCESSIVE VEGETABLE GARDEN:
For the first row of plants in this garden; Kale, Carrots and Beets there are a few common pests that could be problematic during their life cycle. Kale have a couple different common pests to keep on the look out for. Cabbage aphids feed by piercing leaf tissues and sucking out the juices, so a badly colonized kale leaf will never recover and should be pinched off and promptly composted. (https://www.growveg.com/guides/3-common-kale-pests-and-how-to-manage-them/) In North America, harlequin bugs wait until the weather warms in summer to appear on kale plants, and there is no mistaking them because they are so colorful. (https://www.growveg.com/guides/3-common-kale-pests-and-how-to-manage-them/) Carrots common pest problems as well to keep on the look out for. Carrot flies or rather, their maggots, are notorious for damaging the roots. (https://www.growveg.com/guides/3-common-kale-pests-and-how-to-manage-them/) Beets also have common pest problems that you may run into as well. The Beet Leafminer, is a small whitish maggots feed between the leaf surfaces. (http://www.essentialgardenguide.com/garden-vegetables-problems/3/Beets/)
BENEFICAL HABITAT GARDEN:
For this garden there are four different kinds of plants Dill, Buckwheat, Carrots and Alyssum that act as a benefical habitat or food sources for insects. Dill attracts the Lacewing insect. The Lacewing insects destroy most of the other pests including aphids. Buckwheat attracts the Hoverflies also know as the syrphid fly which feeds on aphids, mealybugs and others. Carrots attract Ladybugs which eat many different kinds of pests. Alyssum attracts the Trichogramma wasp which lay their eggs in the eggs of moths, killing them and turning them black.
FRUIT GARDEN:
In this garden there are four fruit plants; Strawberries, Cantaloupe, Blackberries and Blueberries that have pests to be looking out for but there are some corrective actions to take to help subside the pests that are attacking the plants. Strawberries attract Slugs which can be dettered with straw mulch or traps. Cantaloupe attract squash bugs which can be prevented by using row covers. Blueberries attract the Japanese beetle however if a floating row cover or spray is used this will help deter this pest issue. Lastly blueberries attract the Blueberry Tip Borer. One way to elimate this pest problem would be to prune the infested shoots. Another way would be to apply two chemical sprays, one applied at petal fall and the other at first cover.
