Miscellaneous

Soil

Most grains grow well in free-draining, reasonably fertile soils.

Position

Full sun.

Frost tolerant

Varies depending on the species grown.

Feeding

Varies depending on species, but most need little if any supplemental feeding.

Spacing

Single Plants: 10cm (3") each way (minimum)
Rows: 10cm (3") with 10cm (3") row gap (minimum)

Sow and Plant

Most grains can be planted in spring, but some can also be planted in autumn. Either broadcast sow and cover to prevent birds eating the seeds, or sow in drills.
Our Garden Planner can produce a personalised calendar of when to sow, plant and harvest for your area.

Notes

Harvesting

Most grains are harvested with a scythe or pruning shears once they’ve dried and turned yellow-brown. The grain then needs to be threshed from the seed head. If using as a cover crop, cut down before seedheads form.
